Kylemore Castle was built in 1868 as a private home for the family of Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor from London. Designed by Irish architect James Franklin Fuller and  the engineer Ussher Roberts Kylemore boasted all the innovations of the Victorian Age. The home was built as an elaborate love token for Mitchell's wife, Margaret, who tragically died just a few years after the castle construction was finished. It is now the home of a Benedictine community of nuns, who arrived in 1920 after World War I destroyed their home in Belgium.
